Service Connects Us

I once took a "Comparative Religions" course from an esteemed professor at the Claremont School of Theology. We were all struck by the realization that there were more similarities than differences. As in a family, each had rules that kept the members safe from harm while allowing them to flourish. The universal value was selflessness.

Across the world's major religions, a concept of selfless service echoes as a fundamental virtue. This universal value finds its embodiment in Rotary International's guiding principle: "Service Above Self." From Christianity's Golden Rule to Islam's Zakat, from Judaism's Tikkun Olam to Hinduism's Karma Yoga, the call to serve others resonates deeply within diverse faith traditions.

Buddhism encourages alleviating suffering through compassion and loving-kindness, while Sikhism places selfless service at its core. Taoism values actions contributing to societal harmony, and Confucianism promotes benevolence and proper conduct. These varied expressions of service to others converge in Rotary's mission, creating a common ground where people of all beliefs can unite in purpose.

Rotary brings this universal value to life through our diverse membership of 1.4 million individuals spanning the globe. This remarkable tapestry of humanity includes members from all major faiths, cultures, and professions. From the bustling cities of Asia to remote villages of Africa, from European capitals to South American rainforests, Rotarians represent a microcosm of our world's rich diversity.

The strength of Rotary lies in this very diversity. When tackling complex global issues, the variety of perspectives within Rotary becomes a powerful asset. Innovative solutions emerge from the exchange of different viewpoints. Cultural sensitivity is enhanced by local knowledge and volunteers, ensuring projects respect and effectively address community needs. The global reach of Rotary's membership, our "boots on the ground", allows for rapid mobilization of resources and support almost anywhere in the world. Moreover, we Rotarians often serve as unofficial ambassadors, fostering international understanding and building bridges between cultures.

This diversity in action is evident in Rotary's global initiatives. The PolioPlus program, for instance, sees members from countries that once grappled with polio working alongside those from polio-free nations to eradicate the disease globally. Now Malaria eradication is being addressed throughout Africa using similar techniques learned from the Polio program. Water and sanitation projects bring together engineers from developed countries and local leaders in developing regions to provide clean water to communities in need. At Rotary Peace Centers, fellows from conflict zones study and share experiences with those from peaceful nations, developing strategies for building lasting peace.

In an era where global challenges know no borders, Rotary's diverse, united membership offers a practical model for how humanity can work together for the greater good. Climate change, pandemics, and other pressing issues require the kind of collaborative, multinational approach that Rotary exemplifies. Rotary demonstrates that when people of goodwill come together, putting service above self, the differences that might divide us become the very strengths that allow us to change the world.

Great article about the common good found in all religions. While most articles and news stories talk about how religions divide, you took the higher road and spoke about the common bonds. Rotary is a place to embrace those common bonds. Thank you Ray.
